Cheers, Vikash... I've enjoyed your efforts, first found you on a search for FR125s as I have a pair. I'm also building Orions and Thor subs and wondered if you've settled on amplifiers for your Orions yet. I'm using three Hafler TA1600 but would like something that produces less heat. My room gets really toasty warm from the sun and I hate to run the air conditioner just to listen! Charlie

Hi Vikash, I have been reading about your DIY projects with great interest and am looking forward to any updates. I have a question which I hope you can answer for me. I have a pair of TDL RTL3s lying around and agree with you entirely about the tizzy top end tweeter. I was thinking of applying your simple L pad mod, but m a bit confused about the values of the RP1 and RP2 resistors. In your diagram, RP1 is labelled as 1.0000 - is this a 1K resistor? Also, what wattage rating did you use for the resistors? I hope you don't find a cure for your illness. Cheers, John
|
|
Response Hi, Rp1 and Rp2 are 1 Ohm and 10 Ohm respectively. I series/paralleled 2w resistors to get 6 watt rating. I'm interested in hearing your opinions once you've done the L-Pad or any other mods, so let me know how you get on. - Vikash

Hello Vikash, Wondering if you've got the Orions up and running yet... Still awaiting the first UK pair to be made... ps how big is your listening room? Mine is 13ft square roughly so room acoustics may be an issue for me. John

Response Hi, there's already quite a few UK Orion owners. My amps are still not finished. I'm edging closer however and I plan to bring them to the UK audio meet. See uk.diyaudio.com/festival07/ for more info. - Vikash

hey yes i do like that site :) yes it is an illness i am kinda new to the hole DIY speakers but i really enjoy doing it. even just waiting time of thinking what i would want and how i have only made a slot port subwoofer for my home audio tuned to 30hz does vibrate alot when it goes below i think this is down to bracing i used more car making sub program was nice and simple to use and told me all the bits wood i need and size and picture way it goes together. i keep amp in another box on its own rather than in the subs box subwoofer plains as im using more car subwoofer want to more do a proper home subwoofer like the BK monolith (have the 500rms bk amp) ported never done bracing before. not the normal shape so i can fit it under a bed so more like the rectangle not a square is tube better then slot for home audio ? only a student so not much money right now or know good ways to get going on the path on the web sites so much writing about maths and stuff have no clue no one
to help as in friend with the same interest because i learning......... i tend to more like to see the design know all the bits of wood and sizes needed and then picture how it goes together would be nice to know if there a speaker box program in the same way all bits wood like brace port picture of how it would go together i seen a couple of programs. i wanted to design 2 way box for tweeter and woofer/mid but the programs only do the speaker not the tweeter for the box design. iv no idea how that works at all some time would love to move onto 3 way but that will wait till i get better. also is there any router blades/cut bits you recommend for like the flush bit and the just hole part (only cut a hole so far) also never used it do cut say binding post out or subwoofer square out any tips for straight cutting or jig to buy that would make it easy to do things like that (i have circle one) any help on anything would be great. sorry for writing so much. hope it makes sense. just have alot of interest
in this but get stuck... the cross over a site where i by the drivers would make it for me or help with that part more of doing the box that is far or learning yet :) anyway seems a nice site the search for the projects dont seem to work any more i think they used to.

Hi Vikash, First of all WOWWWWWWWWWWWW! Truly awesome. You have done what most us just dream of doing, congrats man way to go! I simply loved all your projects and dream to build some of my own, though in India its next to impossible to do these as the availability of quality components next to none, so its a hurriculane task for us DIY's here to build anything. I want to know where are you from I know you are certainly not from India! And also can I come to you for some quire's regarding diy amp or speakers? With Regards, Sreekanth

Hi Vikash, Very nice and informative audio project site. In particular, I like the section on the conversion of the TDL RTL3's and the comment on the bass - mid drivers seeming to be a variation on the Monacors. My friend Clive Gibson manufactured all the RTL range of drivers at his factory in Chesham, Buckinghamshire - the company name being Musical Technology. This was an interesting setup as Clive was originally one of the chief engineers at IMF which later became TDL, then formed MT when he left TDL. He had an agreement with John Wright of TDL to take over production of all the TDL drive units up until its demise. During and up until this time I had the pleasure of having bespoke drivers made and still have a small stock primarily intended for Transmission Line enclosures, a system I have been designing for years with great success. Back to the subject of RTL's... This is a great shame as the cabinets look like a transmission line, but perform li
ke the bog standard undamped reflex system, and when TDL released these it pretty much signalled the end of TDL as we knew it and the Transmission Lines they were famous for were killed by the poor sonic attributes of the cheaper RTL's that replaced them. Have you ever considered trying a TL system A properly designed one at cutoff is anything from 6 to 10 dB better than a similarly sized sealed or reflex system and using the same driver... Thank you and keep up the good work.. Carl Peake

What a refreshingly clean and professional website. Your page links work w/o a hitch, your prose is informative and not overly verbose... not to mention the high quality projects. I wish I had more time for the DIY end of things...I have managed to restore 4 Nakamichi 730 receivers from the grave, have built many different speakers over the past 3 decades (originally a David B. Weems "Mellow Monster" folded horn back in 1968!) that was the envy of every fraternity brother in college (built about ten more over the 10 years I was there) Current projects are restoring 2 TEAC X2000R reel to reel decks and final tweaking/fiddling with my BG RD75 dipoles... upgrading my electroforming opertation ...etc. auplater auplater

Hello Vikash, I recently acquired a gainclone amp already assembled. Not as nice looking as your offerings but with the great sonics this amp provides I'm hooked. I will be doing some minor changes shortly(rca plugs) and trying to tidy up the wiring a bit. With this being my first chip amp I look forward to the day I can assemble my own. Great site, Bret

I am very impressed by your audio pursuits, although I find myself feeling a mixture of jealousy and admiration reading your site! It appears we are rather similar minded, with the exception that you have successfully turned many of my dreams into breathtaking realities; developing your own driver measurement system, attempting to build your own transducer, trying out the gainclone phenomenon... the list goes on, don't get me started on 3D rendering, image manipulation and digital photography! I congratulate you on finding the time and energy to pursue these interests with the passion that is evident in the quality of your work, and look forward, perhaps, to sharing some ideas with you in the future. I am guessing we are similar ages, I remember the TDL RTL3s, although slightly before my Uni days, by which time I was well on the DIY path. I am 26 next month, and when I was packed off to study engineering I had just received a package of 6 aerogel units from France that
were to become my second DIY speakers. They certainly hosted some good parties later that year, although their excellent detail and imaging was largely lost on the attendant throng. I am currently relocating my webspace at the moment and redesigning my site to track my various speaker designs over the years. Each one teaching me more about design, manufacturing and my changing priorities in audio reproduction and appreciation. You almost made me laugh out loud when I saw you using the little Audax AP100Z0 speakers. I too could not resist the Maplin clear-out deal and paired them with a Focal TC90TD5b tweeter to make a mini-replica of the Wilson CUB. Last Christmas Maplin had a similar blow-out on the smaller paper-coned AP80G0 for 99p each! I bought their last 4 units, with no clue as to what I was going to use them for. A few weeks later, and with some rather decent Morel tweeters won on eBay I had two rather excellent computer speakers. Anyway, don't want to freak you out too much with this fan-mail so
I will wrap things up. I will drop you a line when my site is up in case you are interested to see my work. In the meantime, feel free to reply, and DO update your site with listening impressions and photos of your finished speaker projects!!! I do appreciate, it's hard to find the time. Ben.
